Would you like an opportunity to learn about another culture right in your own home? Discover what life is like in Japan without leaving Victoria! Muskoka Language International is looking for families interested in hosting students from Japan for a Homestay. What is a Homestay? Students ranging in age from 14 to 17 will be visiting Greater Victoria and looking for a place to call home! If you have a spare bedroom with one or two beds and are interested in having the students stay for a short while (1 to 2 weeks) then this may be for you. There are two different opportunities coming up in July and August.

KINDERGARTEN IMMUNIZATION PROGRAM

Immunization clinics for kindergarten-aged children are held at health units between January and March.

Diphtheria, Acellular Pertussis, Tetanus and Polio (Quadracel): Most children in kindergarten are due for a booster dose of this vaccine. This vaccine protects against all four diseases in one shot.

Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR): Children should have received two doses of MMR vaccine by eighteen months of age. Two doses of MMR vaccine are almost one hundred per cent effective in preventing these diseases. If your kindergarten child has not had both doses of MMR vaccine, it is recommended they receive the vaccine in the kindergarten year.

Varicella (Chickenpox): Healthy children who have not already had chickenpox disease, shingles or a previous dose of chickenpox vaccine, should be vaccinated against chickenpox in the kindergarten year. One dose provides protection against the disease.

Hepatitis B: Children born on or after January 1, 2001 should have received a 3-dose series of hepatitis B vaccine. If your kindergarten child has not completed a series of hepatitis B vaccine, it is recommended they receive the vaccine in the kindergarten year.

All these vaccines are provided free of charge by the health unit or your doctor. To check your child's immunization status or to make an appointment, phone your local health unit.
